Most of what I do at PA involves applying Physics to solve bizarre problems. Whether it is spending time in the lab testing a new diagnostic device, or researching the state-of-the-art in laser technology and considering novel applications for our clients, I use science every day to tackle a whole range of client challenges. When I’m not going back to first principles and applying fundamental science to prove out a new concept, I often find myself taking some science or technology and applying it in a totally new way.
The best bit of PA for me is the people I work with. Being surrounded by experts working on cool stuff means there is always something new to learn, and there are always interesting problems to tackle together. I love the fact that everyone, regardless of rank, is approachable and keen to chat about their work. Pastry day in the office is also pretty great.
In my couple of years here so far, I think I’ve used every module from my degree at some point. This means trawling through a whole load of science to pinpoint what is needed, and often jumping between projects which need very different skillsets. At PA, there will always be someone who can help out, and it is close collaboration with the many experts around you that makes this manageable – often a quick chat with the right person can save days of work!
Jump into projects, even if they push you out of your comfort zone. Some of the most enjoyable work I’ve done has terrified me on the first day, but being able to learn from colleagues and get a grasp on some of the coolest science I’ve ever come across quickly turns into a lot of fun!
