Civils Solutions Apprentice (Highways)

What is your name and role at Jacobs?

James Rae – Civil Solutions Apprentice.

How long have you worked for Jacobs?

I have worked at Jacobs just over 4 years, and will be entering year 5 soon of both apprenticeship scheme and university courses.

Describe your role and day-to-day work?

As an apprentice, I am actively engaged in the design process for a variety of projects, making use of advanced digital design software, including AutoCAD and Civil3D. My role involves not only creating and refining detailed drawings but also managing these designs to ensure they meet our clients' specifications. This entails converting the drawings into multiple formats for effective presentation and delivery. Throughout my time at Jacobs, I have had the opportunity to contribute to several significant projects, which has allowed me to deepen my knowledge and gain hands-on experience, while simultaneously taking on more responsibilities in a collaborative work environment.

Through my time at university I have continued my learning and found the support from both the staff on campus and the help and support from others in the office has made sure my experience has been a very good one. Recently I have taken on the STEAM leadership role for the Manchester office and am enjoying the new challenge, increasing our outreach and planning events with new partner schools.

What have you enjoyed about the Apprenticeship Programme?

One of the things I have enjoyed most about the scheme is the involvement in large projects. This experience has made me feel like a valued member of the team and demonstrates Jacobs' commitment to ensuring that all staff are included and can develop their skills. Additionally, I greatly appreciate the fantastic support I receive in the office when I need help with my university work.

What’s your Top Tip for those considering an apprenticeship?

For anyone considering an apprenticeship, there are a few pieces of advice I can give:

  • Get involved with any events in your local area that link to STEM, in school or outside of school, and write about them in your CV. Extracurricular activities show a proactive character and an interest in activities that aren’t always covered fully in school subjects.
  • Seek out job opportunities and apply to a variety of roles, use the application process to develop your own ability, don’t be shy about reaching out to staff at companies and asking for work experience or opportunities they have.
  • Apprenticeships require a lot of work and dedication, but there is a network of people around you that will always be able to help and give answers. There is no such thing as a bad question! Any opportunity to ask a question is an opportunity to develop your skillset, understanding, and ability to do your best work.
