Hello. My name is Andrew Brown and I am an Apprentice Geotechnical Engineer at Jacobs.
I have worked at Jacobs for just shy of 2 years now.
As part of my apprenticeship, I have worked on a range of geotechnical related tasks, which is part of what drew me to the role. At Jacobs, no two days are the same. Recently I have worked with CAD to produce as built drawings, report writing to create a geotechnical desk study and ground investigation specification and calculations for a set of small retaining walls. Additionally, I regularly attend training courses and online webinars which are held internally most weeks. I am also reading for a degree in Civil Engineering at Leeds Beckett university part time and working towards my IEng award through the ICE.
I completed several weeks work experience with Jacobs through my 2 years at college, honestly, I had never heard of the company before my tutor sent me the application form for the work experience. I found it to be a very professional company with high standards and Jacobs is relatively well known outside of the engineering world. I enjoy working for such a large company that operates globally as it provides a range of opportunities and experiences with a very diverse team.
I have worked on a range of different projects, from smaller local projects to nationally recognised schemes. I have also had the opportunity to work on many different tasks, which has helped me to work towards my university degree and ICE IEng accreditation. I have attended many events outside of work through Jacobs, such as conferences, award dinners, lectures etc. I have also had the opportunity to work with a very knowledgeable and friendly team, and I try to attend any team meetings and socials. Within the office, I attend weekly meetings with the other apprentices, and I have both presented and chaired these meetings, which has been a great opportunity to boost my interpersonal and presentation skills.
