Turn Theory Into Practice

Engineering is about turning ideas into reality, solving complex challenges and finding better ways of doing things.

Our 12-week Engineering Summer Placement gives you the opportunity to experience engineering in practice while applying what you've learned at university. You'll work alongside experienced engineers, contribute to real projects and gain valuable insight into how critical infrastructure is designed, built, operated and maintained.

Whether you're considering your future career options or looking to build your practical experience, this placement will help you develop your skills, broaden your understanding of the industry and see engineering in action.

About the Placement

Over 12 weeks, you'll become part of a team working on real engineering activities and projects that support the delivery of essential infrastructure and services.

Depending on your location, discipline and placement, you'll gain exposure to a range of engineering work, including design, technical analysis, project delivery, asset management, maintenance, operational support and continuous improvement activities.

Some placements are primarily office based, while others provide opportunities to visit operational sites, project locations and engineering facilities. Many offer a blend of both, helping you understand how engineering concepts move from planning and design through to delivery and operation.

You'll learn from experienced engineers and technical specialists, contribute to meaningful work and gain first-hand experience of how engineering supports the successful delivery of major projects and operational activities.

What We're Looking For

You'll be in your second or third year of university, studying towards a degree in one of the disciplines below, and intending to return to university following the completion of your placement. The disciplines available at each location are:

• Aberdeen: Civil Engineering, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.
• Glasgow: Civil Engineering, Control & Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, General Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.
• Inverness: Civil Engineering, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.
• Leeds: Control & Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
• Perth: Civil Engineering, Control & Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, General Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.

We're looking for students who:

You don't need to know everything on day one. What matters most is your willingness to learn, contribute and make the most of the opportunities your placement provides.
