The Opportunity

The UK energy market is undergoing a period of rapid and fundamental change. Increasing demand, tighter regulation, and ambitious net zero targets are driving major investment and innovation across the industry. This presents a unique opportunity to join our expanding Energy team in Birmingham, as part of our 2027 Graduate Programme.

You will join a forward-thinking business with ambitious growth plans, offering excellent long-term career development and progression. This is your chance to play a meaningful role in shaping the UK’s energy transition from the very start of your career.

About The Role

As a Graduate Civil Engineer, you will join a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team delivering civil engineering design across a diverse portfolio of energy projects nationwide, with a primary focus on transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Working closely with project managers, team leaders, and other engineering disciplines, you will support both FEED and detailed design stages to provide practical, robust, and innovative civil engineering solutions. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with the civil engineering design for critical grid infrastructure, including substations, overhead line (OHL) works, interconnectors, and grid connection schemes.
  • Supporting the development of enabling infrastructure, energy buildings, protection systems, and associated civil works for power networks.
  • Contributing to broader renewable energy developments, including Energy from Waste, hydropower, and pumped storage schemes.
  • Collaborating with multi-disciplinary project teams to produce technical drawings, engineering calculations, and design documentation.

Your Impact

In this role, you will play a vital part in shaping the critical infrastructure that underpins the UK’s energy transition. Your civil engineering contributions will directly support the delivery of sustainable, resilient energy projects, helping clients navigate complex technical, environmental, and regulatory challenges.

Working collaboratively across disciplines, you will help develop innovative design solutions that improve network efficiency, enable rapid decarbonisation, and strengthen national energy security. Your work will influence nationally significant power networks and grid infrastructure, making a lasting, positive difference to communities and the environment.

About you:

At Stantec, we value your potential over experience. Along with a degree in Civil Engineering (or a closely related discipline) and an active interest in the energy transition and power sectors, you will bring:

  • An Analytical Mind: Ability to apply civil engineering principles to solve complex infrastructure and network challenges.
  • A Communicator: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • A Collaborator: A proactive, adaptable mindset with a desire to learn from senior engineers and a willingness to take ownership of engineering tasks.
  • A Problem-Solver: A passion for sustainability and a desire to challenge conventional thinking to deliver cleaner, more efficient energy solutions.

Please note, we ask our graduates to come into the office 4 days per week, to ensure that colleagues are able to provide the appropriate level of support.

What we can offer you:

  • A competitive salary
  • Private medical insurance
  • A range of benefits, including holiday buy and sell, group income protection and life assurance
  • Permanent employment contract to demonstrate our commitment to your long-term career at Stantec
  • Professional progression plan, supporting you to gain professional chartership

Applicants must have an unconditional right to live and work in the UK for an indefinite period without limitation.

We offer multiple start dates throughout next summer in June, July, August and September.

Please note: we recruit on an ongoing basis and therefore may close this role before the stated closing date so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.
