The Opportunity

Join our 2027 Graduate Programme as a Graduate Electrical Engineer in our Edinburgh office, where you will be part of our market-leading Water Power & Dams team within Energy & Resources.

About The Role

As a Graduate Electrical Engineer, you will balance technical learning with practical project delivery on some of the world’s largest, most complex, and most exciting dams, hydropower, and pumped storage hydro schemes. You will sit within a dedicated, growing multidisciplinary design group, collaborating with civil, mechanical, and hydraulic specialists across all phases of project development—from initial feasibility through outline and detailed design to commissioning.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking electrical engineering calculations and developing outline/detailed designs for hydropower equipment and balance of plant systems.
  • Assisting with the technical specification and selection of transformers, switchgear, generators, control systems, and auxiliary electrical equipment.
  • Supporting design work across electrical balance of plant systems, grid connection interfaces, cable routing, and protection systems.
  • Utilising 3D modelling tools within a Building Information Modelling (BIM) environment to produce detailed models, single line diagrams (SLDs), and layout drawings.
  • Contributing to the production of high-quality technical specifications, feasibility studies, risk assessments, and engineering reports.
  • Integrating closely with associated disciplines—such as civil, structural, and mechanical engineering—to create unified project solutions.

We are committed to supporting employees in achieving relevant professional qualifications and accreditation. The applicable professional qualification for this role is Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) or Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Your Impact

In this role, you will be at the forefront of delivering innovative electrical engineering solutions for large-scale energy storage and clean power infrastructure globally. Supporting landmark projects—such as Coire Glas in Scotland, as well as supporting major UK water companies—your electrical design contributions will directly enable the global energy transition and long-term grid stability. Working alongside industry-leading specialists, your efforts will help shape sustainable, resilient energy systems that safeguard resources and make a lasting difference to communities.

About you:

At Stantec, we value your potential over past experience. Along with an accredited degree (BEng/MEng in Electrical Engineering or a closely related power systems discipline), and a keen interest in the energy transition. You will also be:

  • An Adapter - You're able to remain calm in new and changing situations, comfortably switching between a variety of dynamic and exciting tasks.
  • A Perseverer - You stay composed in the face of setbacks, approaching challenges with confidence and determination.
  • A Collaborator - You work effectively with lots of different people, considering others’ perspectives to shape better outcomes.
  • A Problem-Solver - You love to give your thoughts based on what you see, being unafraid to challenge conventional thinking.

Please note, we ask our graduates to come into the office 4 days per week, to ensure that colleagues are able to provide the appropriate level of support.
