St Pancras International Station

The station had fallen into severe disrepair and in 2002, Union Railways decided it was time for change. Laing O'Rourke were awarded the major redevelopment contract as leaders of the integrated CORBER JV. This was an incredibly complex project with the objective of completing essential renovation works to increase the station’s national and international capacity. This involved making extensive changes to the platform configurations, extending and refurbishing the current station and constructing a brand new Thameslink ‘box' underground station.

Within this remit, we were required to merge the original features of the Grade I listed building with technology from the 21st century. This demanded a sympathetic fusion that struck a balance between the strict English Heritage guidelines and the requirements of the most discerning of modern rail travellers.

The Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford

The first purpose-built centre of its kind in the UK, the Blavatnik School of Government will provide tomorrow’s political leaders and policy makers with world-class educational facilities. Designed to encourage collaboration, the building’s circular structure features a series of spherical terraces balanced upon one another, connected by curved staircases that curl through the interior. The successful completion of this prestigious project has proved a showcase for the benefits of direct delivery.

The building’s award-winning architectural vision demanded the most exacting aesthetic standards: a spiralling cascade of shimmering glass envelopes the exterior, contrasting with a free-slowing concrete interior, pieced together flawlessly as if created in a single pour.

The project team used digital engineering to develop the design, ensuring the structure’s constituent parts blended seamlessly with one another, with no visible joints or services.

This technology was also used to devise the delivery strategy – and identify ongoing opportunities for improvement during the construction phase. In parallel, a web-based asset management system was created, which was handed over to the client on completion.

City of Westminster Courts

London's oldest functioning law courts make way for a state-of-the-art new building with first-class facilities

Laing O'Rourke was appointed as principal contractor to demolish most of the buildings on site and construct new improved space as part of the client's wider strategy to improve the capacity and facilities of the magistrates’ courts in London. The new five-storey building contains ten new magistrates' courtrooms, each with a secure dock and the capability for video conferencing. Support accommodation includes a dedicated secure custody suite that can contain up to ten off-street custody vehicles; secure holding areas adjacent to the courtrooms designed to minimise any unnecessary waiting time; WiFi in parts of the building to make better use of waiting time and improve the level of customer service for visitors; a layout designed for step-free circulation and a number of Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) enhancements to provide access for all; and a dedicated press room.

A full-length atrium brings natural daylight into the heart of the new building, including the courtrooms, and forms a setting for the linear arrangement of courts. Externally the reinforced concrete post-tensioned structure features a four-storey stone latticework screen that wraps around the front of the building, follows the existing street line and culminates in a grand public entrance forecourt. High quality internal finishes include stone flooring and walnut courtroom linings.

One Hyde Park

Remarkable and groundbreaking, a residential complex that exceeds all preconceptions of luxury.

The One Hyde Park project is remarkable and groundbreaking in many ways. The levels of innovation in engineering, as well as other areas of the build, emphasise our unwavering commitment to providing our clients with smart construction solutions.

This complex has set new luxurious standards worldwide. It has given Knightsbridge a distinctive new residential development that relates strongly to the existing streetscape. To reach the highest level of quality possible, the team adopted a collaborative approach, combining the skills and expertise of some of the best professionals in architecture, art, design and construction. The architect, Lord Rogers, remarked that the build quality was the finest he had seen anywhere in his 50-year career. One Hyde Park exemplifies Laing O’Rourke’s ‘total solutions provider’ capabilities with nine of our businesses involved in the design, build and fit-out.
