We are dedicated to reducing our impact on the environment and pride ourselves in being a responsible sustainable business.
Climate change is the most urgent environmental challenge of our time. Every business has a role to play in tackling this threat and AWE is taking definitive action. We are harnessing our scientific and technological expertise to reduce negative impacts, research green innovation ideas and deliver clean growth.
AWE has a single ESH Policy Statement endorsed by the AWE plc Chief Executive, which clearly sets out the way AWE conducts business.
The ESH Policy details the company commitment to continual improvement and the prevention of pollution, and provides a framework for the setting and reviewing of environmental objectives and targets through defined business plans. The ESH policy statement has been made accessible to all staff and is communicated to all persons working for or on behalf of the organisation during the employee or contractor induction course.
Our Environmental Sustainability Strategy sets out our ambition to further reduce our environmental footprint and have a positive, sustainable impact across the organisation. We have 3 key ambitions:
Our 2030 vision is to almost halve our carbon emissions from site heating and electricity in line with science-based targets as an important intermediate step to our 2050 goal.
A key element of our carbon strategy is energy procurement. All our purchased electricity is from renewable sources, and we are exploring opportunities for entering into Purchased Power Agreements and investing in on-site renewables.
We aim to positively manage our natural capital and cultural heritage, to maximise the benefit for current and future generations.
As part of our ongoing improvement activities AWE aims to:
Increase engagement with our stakeholders to ensure biodiversity improvements are aligned with regional and national Nature Recovery Plans.
We plan to reduce AWE’s resource footprint further by managing and conserving scarce and non-renewable resources, minimising waste production and reusing and recycling all controlled waste.
