Gradcracker Insight - Hints and Tips from Hannah at Frazer-Nash

Team information

You will be working in our Materials Performance teams in our Asset Integrity department. The team applies its materials science and engineering skills across a range of industry sectors to support clients from the concept and feasibility stage, through design, into operations and through to life extension and decommissioning. The teams use a range of techniques including systems engineering thinking, design and assurance practices and material modelling.

What you’ll be doing at Frazer-Nash?

Working within a consultancy environment offers the chance to experience a wide variety of diverse projects across a range of industry sectors; you'll be given the opportunity to develop yourself at each step of the project lifecycle, finding the missing piece of the design puzzle to managing project delivery, winning work and having the opportunity to work directly with clients.

Some examples of the types of work that you could be involved in include:

  • Supporting the design of future nuclear power plants through the selection and assurance of materials.
  • Understanding degradation mechanisms and developing measures to increase the life of telecommunication infrastructure.
  • Characterising exotic materials used in gas turbines and developing models for use in advanced numerical assessments.
  • Research coating technologies to project Royal Navy ships.

What you’ll need?

We are interested in hearing from excellent candidates who want to work in Materials Engineering and Materials Science and have a degree in one of these subjects. We will also be interested to hear from candidates with related degrees such as Mechanical, Nuclear and Chemical Engineering, and Physics where a specialism on materials was made.

Engineering Consultancy is the juncture at which People, Projects and STEM meet. To be successful in this role you will need not only fundamental technical skills but also an aptitude and interest in:

  • Planning projects for successful delivery.
  • Communicating with a wide range of project stakeholders

The nature of our work means that we sometimes require staff to access Government material, it is therefore necessary for all of our employees to gain appropriate security clearance. We will apply for clearance if you have successfully been selected for a position, and we will decide if we can successfully gain full clearance on your behalf based on the content of your application. Any offer of employment is subject to this requirement being met.

What can Frazer-Nash offer you?

You will join us with an excellent academic record. However, this is just the first step, we want to support your career development so that you achieve relevant professional qualifications including Chartership. You will be assigned a mentor who will work with you to develop your own individual development plan so that you can gain the necessary skills and experience to become Chartered. To enable you to achieve your full potential we will give you the opportunity to spend extended periods of time working across the disciplines within our technical groups as well as spending time on our clients’ sites, which is so important for becoming the great consultant that you could be.

We will help you to develop and nurture your potential as you grow within your role and steer yourself towards new and exciting future career prospects. At Frazer-Nash we encourage development of you and your ideas in an impactful, meaningful way.
