Ecology Internship

Ecology, Biology, Hydrology.

Introduction

United Utilities provides water and sewage services to seven million people across the North West of England. It's a big job and a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly for our customers.

Inspiring an innovation culture
We believe everyone should be able to innovate. We're looking at solutions to real issues in our industry.

From operating our pipes and improving water quality, to embracing new technologies and safeguarding the local environment – whether you're in our head office or out on site, there's always plenty going on.

Our internship programmes will give you the opportunity to learn first-hand how we make this happen. Our undergraduate and graduate programmes are key to helping us support customers.

Role Overview

As part of our planning & ecology team, you'll have the chance to work alongside a dedicated team of planners, ecologists and landscape architects.

As an ecologist in United Utilities, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring ecological support and advice is provided across the business and, working closely with our engineers, is integral to the design and delivery of all our capital works.

Our team of ecologists are responsible for a wide range of surveys and assessments and help identify any measures necessary to ensure we protect and enhance biodiversity.

During your placement, under the guidance of your mentor and manager, you will gain an overview of the type of work undertaken, moving around the team to gain experience of all relevant aspects.

This will give you good working experience of the planning and regulatory system and will also include site visits to see for yourself the type of projects we design and construct.

What we are looking for

United Utilities is looking for undergraduate Ecologists in their penultimate year of studying an Ecology related degree. The successful applicant will have an interest in ecology and an awareness of the water industry.

To apply you need to:

  • Have researched and have knowledge of United Utilities' activities.
  • Be working towards at least a 2:2 in an Ecology related degree.
  • Have varied technical knowledge, not only through academic experience, but also through social and professional experience.
  • Have a strong foundation at A-level.
  • Have good computer skills particularly in Microsoft Office and GIS.
  • Be motivated and enthusiastic, an excellent team player, possessing ambition and drive.
  • Possess good written, presentation and interpersonal skills and have the ability to communicate and influence across all levels.
  • Be comfortable working flexibly across a range of tasks and activities to set deadlines, as well as being able to prioritise your time.

Benefits

Don't worry, you won't be going it alone. Your mentor and manager will work with you as you progress through your placement and support you as you work towards your personal development goals.

When you join our Intern Scheme you'll receive a good salary, and you'll also be eligible for a bonus of up to 7.5%. You get 26 days' holiday to take during your placement, and at our fantastic Lingley Mere site we have an onsite gym, coffee shops and other great facilities.

And while access to an award-winning pension scheme might not be top of your priorities right now, responsible employers like us make sure you get one anyway – you'll pay 5% in to your pot and you'll get an extra 10% from the company. And that's not the only way to save, as you'll be able to buy company shares as part of the employee share buy scheme.

We need fantastic people to enable us to deliver a great service to the public. We are committed to reaching and recruiting from every community and then supporting employees to achieve their full potential ensuring they feel valued and included, regardless of their gender, age, race, disability, sexual orientation or social background.

We've signed the Gradcracker feedback pledge.
(This means that we will supply feedback if requested after an interview.)
