Becoming a trainee at Bird & Bird is the first step to fulfilling your potential and shaping your long-term career. You'll have real responsibility from day one - working for exciting clients across a range of sectors in a number of practice areas. Your relationship with the firm starts from the moment we make you an offer. We maintain close links with the University of Law to ensure that your transition is as smooth as possible. You can expect regular contact and input from the firm before you even begin your formal career.
As a STEM student, before you join us in 2025 we expect you to undertake the Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL) and Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) stage 1 and 2 and we generally require you to attend the University of Law in London for this. We will provide sponsorship through the course and this includes payment of the course fees and a maintenance grant.
During your two-year training contract, you will spend six months in four of the following practice areas: Commercial, Employment, Corporate, Banking, Intellectual Property, Tax, Dispute Resolution and Real Estate. We listen to your department preferences and ensure, wherever possible, that you have either an international or client secondment to enrich your learning.

You can apply if you can commence a Training Contract in 2025. This means you’ll be in your final year of your STEM degree.
You’ll take part in a business-skills development programme that will provide the basic building blocks for your future development within the business of law. The application process typically includes an online application form, a Watson-Glaser test, a video interview, and an assessment centre. Once you have applied, you’ll receive a confirmation of your received application form. You’ll be notified if your application has been unsuccessful or receive an email regarding the next stage of the application at each stage.
