Tell us about your role at ASMPT.
I am the Director of Software Engineering, working within our Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) group.
Tell us about your career progression timeline. Including when you started, and how long you've been at ASMPT.
I first joined ASMPT in July 1997 as a placement student working in the system test team. I really enjoyed my year with the company and returned in July 1999 as a Junior Software Engineer. I have now been with the company for 25 years, having worked in multiple roles in the software department and across two divisions of the business. In 2005 I become a Team Leader which drove my career into management, becoming Software Manager in 2015 and my current role of Director in 2020.
What is your favourite part of working at ASMPT? What do you enjoy most about your role?
The software we write at ASMPT brings the machine to life, allowing axes to move, sensors to be read etc which allows the machine to print boards. During my early career, this was my favourite part of my role, seeing what you have coded make the machine do something really technical and interesting and thinking to yourself 'I did that'. It was very rewarding and drove me to want to do more. In my current role, I need to ensure my department are working to their best abilities and I now take great pride in ensuring they feel the same as I did back then and are supported/motivated to do their best and enjoy what they do.
Tell us about the opportunities for advancements and development within ASMPT
There are many opportunities to develop at ASMPT, whether you are interested in the technical side or managerial side we have programs for each. Personally, I think it is important for the individual to drive their career forward and take the opportunities that are offered to them. We have Career development plans that we create with our employees so that they can progress, and become the next generation of specialists and managers.
How has ASMPT helped you in your career progression?
I was given opportunities to show my abilities on projects, which then led to promotion. When we opened a new division for Alternative Energies making machines for Solar/Fuel Cells this was a great boost to my knowledge, capabilities and therefore career. I have always worked in great teams throughout my career with some fantastic people who have guided, encouraged and helped me along the way. This in turn has built my confidence and self belief allowing me to develop my skills and become the person I am today.
How does ASMPT support work life balance?
Making sure that we are flexible in the way that we work such that the projects and milestones are delivered on time with excellent quality, all while maintaining a healthy home life balance. Understanding and supporting each other is key to this, being able to step up when needed and help each other out makes for a better work life balance for all.
What are some of the benefits that ASMPT provided throughout your role?
There are many benefits to working at ASMPT, apart from the people who are welcoming, friendly and helpful. The generous annual leave allowance allows me to take a few restful holidays throughout the year. There are long service awards that recognise commitment to the company and reward with extra holiday and gifts.
Hybrid working allows me to work from home as well as the office, offering the best of both worlds. The sports and social club is wonderful, they offer a range of activities for employees that allow people to get to know each other outside the office and get some fresh air! The Summer and Christmas parties are excellent, it is great to see everyone getting together and having a good laugh. It is a great way for new people to integrate with others and make new friends.
What is it like living in Weymouth?
Well, I have always lived in Weymouth so I may be a little biased here but it is safe, friendly and picturesque. If you like water sports or outdoor adventures then we have this covered. There are many great places to visit nearby and we are only a couple of hours in each direction from the nearest city.
