Flight Physics Data Science Engineer Placement (12.5 months)

The Flight Physics team is responsible for the overall aircraft design activities across all the stages of aircraft development, from pre-design work to in-service support.

The majority of Flight Physics activities are focused on aircraft programmes such as the A350XWB, A320neo and future aircraft research programmes, but there is also significant effort on Research & Technology capability/software development and data science and as a result our work activities are varied and interesting.

There are four departments in the UK - Aerodynamics, Loads and Aeroelastics, Mass Properties and Flight Physics Capability & Strategy - between the teams they cover a wide range of activities.

This internship is based in Flight Physics Capabilities and Strategy. They develop the diverse range of tools and capabilities used by Flight Physics and are looking at how to apply new technologies such as Design Space Exploration, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data Analytics to our business.

What you will be doing:

Interns make a significant contribution to Flight Physics. You will be given responsibility and ownership of your tasks during your internship, doing real and challenging work within your team and experiencing a wide range of technical topics. 

This internship is for a Junior Data Science Engineer and will consist of a main project focussed around data analytics and visualisation of Flight Physics data but will also include additional shorter tasks alongside to give exposure to other subjects. 

On your main project you will be supporting the development of frameworks for visualisation (based on a three-tier web app architecture) that will enable Engineers to produce a wide range of customisable visualisations reliant on both static and dynamic data.

You will also contribute to innovation projects by applying modern data analytics and machine learning algorithms to analyse Flight Physics data sets with a focus on generating visualisations that will act as a lever to kick off strategic transformations.

Requirements:

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.

As the successful candidate, you will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Studying towards a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Physics, Engineering or a similar technical subject; 
  • Some experience with software development/coding;
  • Naturally curious and excited to build understanding;
  • Ability to manage problems, communicating effectively to resolve them in a fast-paced environment;
  • Proactive, love to learn and be able to focus on your own self development;
  • Creativity and desire to innovate and develop new capabilities.

Knowledge in the following languages and frameworks would be advantageous but not required:

  • Python;
  • Dash & Plotly;
  • React;
  • Typescript.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: You will be subject to a BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) check. You may also need to gain UK SC-level Security Clearance or Export Control, depending on the role.
