The Opportunity

Our Energy Advisory team (of over 40 people) operates out of the Arup Midlands and West regions. They provide strategic advice to our clients and actively drive the development and delivery of a range of projects across the energy sector, including high voltage transmission systems & resilience, offshore interconnectors, offshore wind, hydrogen and carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS).

Our service offering to our clients is multidisciplinary and highly varied. It includes the development and management of programmes and projects, project delivery, procurement advice and support, technical-commercial analysis including risk analysis, infrastructure development strategy, owner’s engineering support and management consulting. Our clients include some of the UK’s biggest energy companies including National Grid, Uniper, ScottishPower Renewables, SGN and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.

Tackling climate change is arguably the most difficult challenge humanity has faced and overcoming it will require experts from all disciplines and backgrounds to come together and collaborate. Arup has made sustainability and the urgent need to transform the energy system to low carbon its most important priority in response to this challenge, through the launch of our climate services plan. We are recognised as leading consultants in this field and are working for both public and private sector clients on some of the most important advisory and engineering projects in the UK today. This includes advice to central and local governments on decarbonisation strategies, managing innovation programmes for low carbon technologies, delivering design solutions for tomorrow's low carbon energy system, and providing sustainable investment advice.

We provide end-to-end support across the entire project lifecycle — from early strategic planning, business case development, and governance, through to managing the securing of lands & consents, managing the Owner's Engineer role, and even services beyond the delivery phase, into operation & maintenance and decommissioning.

As a Graduate Energy Consultant, you'll work alongside skilled professionals and, from day one, you will be working on real life meaningful projects - adding value to clients, while exploring challenges with curiosity and creativity.

You'll learn from others and immediately begin creating your professional network. Our advice is multidisciplinary and highly varied, providing the perfect platform for you to develop in alignment to your interests. The diverse nature of our work means you will be expected to broaden as well as deepen your knowledge and skills in Energy Consulting. There are regular learning sessions with our leadership team, opportunities for site visits, international travel, and all kinds of social events that will support your learning, development and career progression.

  • Liaising and coordinating between clients and multidisciplinary suppliers, contractors and subject matter experts (both internal and external to Arup) and undertaking research in order to produce high-quality conclusions and recommendations reports that are suitable to share with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Supporting project teams with the development of technical/commercial papers and reports and presenting on the findings and conclusions – for example, this could be a feasibility study advising on technical options for energy storage systems

  • Management and development of the Arup appointment and client relationship – this includes being responsible for its commercial success
  • Undertaking site visits and surveys
  • Keeping up-to-date on the Energy Sector (trends, changes, policy, technology, etc.) to ensure you can understand and deliver excellence to clients.
  • Supporting business development activities, for future work opportunities
  • Application of software packages such as Power BI, MS Project, MS Excel, SharePoint, etc.
