Cummins are now recruiting for our 2020 intake of 12 month placements in the UK, which provide a meaningful opportunity for university students to accomplish real-world projects in a professional environment.

If successful on the programme you may be given the opportunity to work part-time during your final year of study and/or be offered the opportunity to return as a graduate.

The role of Metallurgist Placement Student will be to work with colleagues in the Materials Laboratory to provide metallurgical support to Production, Quality, Engineering and Service groups.

  • Working within the Quality Department reporting to the Materials Laboratory Supervisor
  • Liaise with Quality, Engineering and Production Teams on metallurgical issues
  • Carry out metallurgical investigations to help provide root cause failure analysis and drive corrective actions
  • Investigate and report on engine component failures to determine if they were caused by metallurgical issues
  • Support Purchasing/SQI in component approval for resourcing work
  • Support the plant with metallurgical production related issues
  • Carry out 3rd level metallurgical audits on engine components
  • Assist the Quality Test and Quality Customer Teams with problem solving relating to Engine Testing and Customer Quality Issues.

Qualifications

  • The applicant will be workings toward a BSc Degree or equivalent in Metallurgy or Materials Engineerin
  • General knowledge of physical metallurgy, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy and processes such as steel making, casting, forging, welding and joining etc.
  • Experience of using a SEM would be beneficial but not mandatory as training will be provided
  • The applicant should have sound analytical capabilities and preferably have some practical Laboratory experience, and possess good organisational and communication skills.

  • Training in Corporate systems such as Oracle and familiarisation with other business software (eg Product Lifecycle Management, Metallurgy and Chemistry Work Order System).
  • Materials Laboratory Practices and procedures
  • SEM/EDX operation and interpretation
  • Engine Appreciation Course
  • Coaching to enable the development of other business skills.
