Imaging Geophysicist

MSci Geophysics, Imperial College London

Current project: 4D time-lapse seismic imaging of ocean bottom cable/node data in the Caspian Sea. The main challenge of this project is to overcome the data acquisition differences between the baseline and monitor surveys which were acquired 12 years apart and not designed with 4-D imaging in mind.

Current focus: Optimising 4D matching and 4D co-denoise between the base and monitor. Due to the different acquisition geometry and methods, the two datasets have distinct noise characteristics. It is challenging to remove the noise without compromising the time-lapse signal.

My journey in geophysics began during my undergraduate studies. At the time, I wasn’t familiar with geophysics as a subject, but I knew I wanted to do applied science, preferably in a field related to earth science. Geophysics appeared as the perfect option for me. During my degree, I was introduced to different aspects of geophysics, ranging from working in a geochemistry lab to going on geological field trips. After 4 years of exploring, I found I was most interested in seismic imaging, which gives a fantastic view of the earth’s crust.

As a student in the Royal School of Mines, CGG has always been a familiar name to me. I have attended numerous career events when guest speakers and recruiters from CGG were invited. CGG also sponsors our football team! So as soon as I saw the job advert from CGG, I clicked apply.

Since I joined as an imaging geophysicist, I have worked on big projects with more than 10 people on the team as well as two-person fast turnaround projects. The work is challenging which makes it exciting. I enjoy how I am able to apply my knowledge of physics and maths to real-world problems, and my work has the potential to make an impact on exploration decision making and ensuring production safety.

The technology we use is always developing and innovative, so I am constantly learning. With everyone being extremely friendly and always free to help, I feel I have developed a lot personally not only in technical skills but also in soft skills for instance communicating within a team, giving short and concise presentations in front of big audiences, and managing client expectations.

We also have lots of subsidised social events or sports activities. It’s a great way to bond with your team and meet people from other departments. Pubs and meals are always our go-to choices, but my favourite is trying out new things like go-karting, dodgeball and escape rooms.
