Petroleum Geologist

At CGG, not only is new thinking and challenging ideas encouraged, you are given lots of fantastic opportunities to support this from day one.

MSc in Integrated Petroleum Geoscience, University of Aberdeen; MEarthSci in Geology & Physical Geography, University of Edinburgh.

Growing up in Scotland I was lucky enough to be surrounded by fantastic geology and knew this was the career path I wanted to pursue.

After studying Geology & Physical Geography at the University of Edinburgh, I went on to gain an MSc in Integrated Petroleum Geoscience from the University of Aberdeen.

My MSc project explored the prospectivity of the NE Rona Ridge, West of Shetland as part of the UK 30th licensing round. I joined CGG in 2018 as a Petroleum Geologist where I am based out of the North Wales office in Llandudno.

My role in CGG is working on the Basins & Plays tool, a play fairway and petroleum systems database designed to help companies with exploration. The thing I love most about my job is that no two days are the same. When I first joined CGG, I was working on Norwegian basins looking at their geology and carrying out reservoir mapping and basin modelling. Now I am working on the other side of the world in the West Philippines producing chronostratigraphic charts and understanding its tectonic evolution.

The opportunities you receive at CGG are great. I have taken part in a number of training sessions including core interpretation and geochemical modelling, attended a conference in Ireland on petroleum exploration in the Atlantic Margin and travelled to Kuala Lumpur where I shadowed a senior geologist learning the skills and techniques required to provide excellent technical training to industry.

In the 9 months since I joined, not only has CGG been a fantastic, welcoming place to work but there are very few places where I could be working on the geology of Indonesia during the day then go surfing on the North Wales coastline or hiking in the Welsh mountains after work. The work life balance doesn’t get much better than this.
