Leonardo’s Graduate Development Programme offers you a permanent position to develop your knowledge and skills in our innovative and practical environment. In addition to working with our highly skilled engineers and business professionals, you will complete a 2 year formal training programme to develop the skills you require to be a leading technical or business professional of the future.

On joining the Leonardo graduate programme, you will be provided with a wealth of development opportunities in both virtual and applied working environments. On our programme you will engage with challenging and exciting project work, and deliver innovative business or technical solutions as part of a team of subject matter experts. You will gain a wide array of experience in your day to day role, however as part of the programme you will also complete a number of development modules and activities over a two year period. What you will do

How this role fits in

The Luton site is home to the Electronic Warfare (EW) and Major Air Programmes (MAP) lines of business. The engineers based at this site work with the latest technology to develop a wide range of products for both manned and unmanned aircraft platforms, including airborne radars and sensors, protection and countermeasure systems and integrated mission systems. Graduate Safety Engineers are needed to join the growing Luton Engineering community to work alongside some of the most talented engineers in the UK.

Role description

Graduate Safety Engineers support the development of world-leading technologies and capabilities across multiple Avionic Systems and Platforms.  As a Graduate Safety Engineer you will influence design by analysis of Safety and environmental aspects to aid in the delivery of battle winning equipment; from the development and concept designs for the next generation of EW capability, through to live trials of equipment and systems alongside our customers and end-users.

Key Responsibility Areas

Working as part of an established safety engineering community and supported by a team of experienced engineers, you will be responsible for:

  • Use your Safety Analysis skills across the full system lifecycle: from requirements identification through design, development, manufacture system integration, acceptance testing, delivery and when required disposal.
  • Be involved on all aspects of safety assessment, from Hazard Identification through to delivery of project Safety Case Reports. You will undertake assessment and analysis using various techniques including Functional Failure Analysis system requirements and Fault Tree Analysis, to identifying and validate system requirements, influence design trade-offs and architecture to reduce safety risks.
  • Conduct Environmental Impact Assessments ensuring that the products are complaint with applicable legislation.
  • Develop Safety Requirements and identify appropriate verification and validation methods.
  • Construct arguments, based upon evidence gathered to support safety claims.
  • Present the outcomes of safety analysis to Integrated Project Teams and Customers
  • Take part in incident or observation analysis as required
  • Work closely with many different engineering disciplines, customers, partners and suppliers to solve complex problems and deliver safe products
  • Contribute to continual improvement of the Company Safety Management System.

What we are looking for

Mandatory

Please note that in order to apply for this opportunity you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance. Normally this is to the level of Security Check (typically known as “SC”) for our business.

Qualifications

All of our roles require (a) a minimum of an upper Second class Bachelors/Integrated Masters degree, or (b) a higher degree, such as a MSc or PhD. 

For the Graduate Safety Engineer role, the acceptable degrees are: mathematics, physics, aerospace/aeronautical engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, general engineering, mechanical engineering, and safety engineering.

You must have an understanding of mathematics to at least A-Level standard, and a basic understanding of electronics.

Highly desirable

You should ideally have experience of working with engineering development tools (e.g. CAMEO Systems Modeller, Azure, DOORS, Adelard ASCE and Isograph FaultTree+, Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel).
