The role

Our two-year scheme provides the opportunity for a graduate to train in commercial property within the UKs construction company to become a Chartered Surveyor. The role would either suite a graduate with a relevant surveying degree or a graduate who is prepared to study part-time for a post-graduate surveying qualification. The funding of the post-graduate course would be included as part of the programme.

The programme provides mentoring and development by senior leaders in the Property Team and hands-on work in the business to ensure you will finish the scheme equipped and ready to embark on a successful and accelerated career.

The Property team is based in London and Derby and is responsible for commercial property across the UK. The role can be based in either location but would involve extensive travel across the UK.

What you'll be doing

The Property Team are responsible over one million sq ft of commercial property in the UK, spread across 68 sites with a budget of GBP24m pa for the permanent estate. The properties can range from headquarter offices in Canary Wharf to a small regional office in Elgin, Scotland. The Property Teams job is to ensure all these properties provide a modern, safe and productive environment for the business to operate from.

In addition to managing the permanent estate the Property Team advise on properties acquired specifically for a contract. These can range from fields to large warehouses and offices. On average the team deal with over a 100 of these each year which provides a huge variety of work which the graduate role would be involved with.

There are three Senior Property Managers in the Property Team and the role will be partnered with one of them depending on which location the role is based from. As the role is working for a client and not a surveying practise it means you will cover all aspects of commercial property and be instructing consultants for their advice. Key tasks include:

  • Acquiring new properties
  • Disposing of surplus properties
  • Dealing with the maintenance and running of existing properties
  • Instructing agents to deal with rent reviews and dilapidation settlements
  • Ensuring rating assessments are correct and paid on time
  • Design and fitting-out of new premises.

It is likely the two-year programme will include a rotation to the other base to ensure the role has full exposure to all the Property Team and the work they undertake.

The aim by the end of the programme is that you will have gained a broad experience in all aspects of commercial property, an understanding of the Balfour Beatty business and be able to qualify as a Chartered Surveyor.

You will be part of a graduate cohort and will be assigned Business Improvement and Corporate Social Responsibility Projects that can impact and change the way we work as a business.

What we're looking for

  • A real interest in commercial property and working for an occupier
  • The ability to deliver property projects to budget and programme
  • A driven, self-motivated attitude, with the ability to work on your own initiative and influence decision making.

What you'll need:

  • A minimum of a 2:1 degree
  • Ideally previous work experience in property
  • Eligibility to work and live permanently in the UK
  • A full, clean UK driving licence.
