Becoming an Officer

Before beginning training as an engineer officer, all personnel must complete Initial Naval Training (Officer) (INT(O)) at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.

These 30 weeks will ensure that the young officer is ready for subsequent phases of specialist training. It will stimulate, inspire and teach a new generation to act and react instinctively as Naval Officers in the front line.

IOT is split into two terms

Militarisation (14 weeks)

Officer Cadets (OCs) study a Core Military Skills package including training on basic combat skills, physical fitness, first aid, ceremonial training and military values and standards.

OCs also study basic leadership, planning, command orders and navigation skills. The term culminates in two leadership exercises: Basic Leadership Development and Assessed Basic Leadership Exercise.

  • Naval Core Training
  • Physical Development
  • Ceremonial Training
  • Navigation and Seamanship
  • Naval General Training

Marinisation (15 weeks)

OCs build on the Command, Leadership and Management skills to apply them within a maritime environment. OCs are taught basic seamanship and navigation and apply their practical maritime training using twin-screw boats.

They also undertake continued strategic studies. This ends with the Maritime Assessed Leadership Exercise, which is set in a tactical scenario on the River Dart.

OCs deploy on Initial Sea Time for 6 weeks. For this, they join a seagoing unit. Their deployment within the Fleet and integration within the Ship’s Company provides a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of life at sea in an operational warship.

Subject to passing all elements of INT(O), the ultimate finale of the course is the prestigious Pass-out Parade, a proud moment for both the cadets and their families.
