Structa is a multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy of around 40 people, working across four UK offices for private and public sector clients. Our projects run from bespoke homes through to major regeneration and new housing schemes for leading housebuilders and commercial clients.
We were founded in 2004 by four like-minded engineers who set out to build something better - a business that would serve clients well by bringing together a broad, talented team and giving them the support to do their best work. The role
As a Graduate Civil Engineer in our Swindon office, you’ll join a busy team delivering fully coordinated, economical infrastructure design on housing, regeneration and commercial schemes across the UK. From day one you’ll be involved in real projects - supported by experienced engineers and our hands-on partners - producing the kind of work that goes on to be built.
It’s a role designed to stretch you. You’ll learn the practical craft of civil engineering: how to model the ground, design highways and drainage that actually work, navigate the demands of statutory authorities, and balance technical ambition with commercial reality.
You’ll also begin building the communication and client-facing skills that turn a graduate into a Chartered professional.
Key responsibilities
As your experience grows, you’ll progressively take on more of the following:
Infrastructure design - highway geometry and junction design, foul and surface water drainage, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), and earthworks and levels.
Ground modelling and site engineering - interpreting topographical and ground investigation data to produce coordinated site layouts and external works.
Calculations and drawings - preparing engineering calculations, design notes, drawings and specifications using industry-standard software.
Statutory and third-party liaison - supporting submissions to highways authorities, water companies and lead local flood authorities, including S38, S104 and S278 agreements.
Coordination - working alongside our structural and geo-environmental colleagues, plus architects, planners and contractors, to deliver integrated designs.
Site visits and inspections - attending sites, design team meetings and client meetings to understand how design translates into construction.
Client communication - contributing to reports, written advice and meetings, building your professional presence.
Your development - a clear route to Chartership
Our Graduate Development Programme is aligned with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and gives you a clear, supported route to professional qualification. You’ll be assigned a Supervising Civil Engineer and a Delegated Engineer, build your training record from day one, and have your progress reviewed regularly. We reimburse your ICE membership fees, give you paid study leave and paid leave to sit your professional exams, and surround you with Chartered engineers who’ve walked the same path.
Beyond Chartership, our internal coaching and management development support helps you keep growing into senior and leadership roles.
What we’re looking for
Essential
An ICE-accredited civil engineering degree (or one suitable for the ICE Chartered route via further learning).
Strong numeracy, attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem solving.
Clear written and verbal communication - you can explain technical ideas to non-technical people.
A genuine interest in infrastructure, the built environment and how things get built.
A collaborative, can-do attitude - you’ll thrive in a small, close-knit team.
The right to live and work in the UK.
Desirable
A full UK driving licence, given regular site visits.
Familiarity with civil engineering design software (e.g. AutoCAD/Civil 3D, MicroDrainage/InfoDrainage, PDS) - we’ll train you on what we use.
Relevant industrial placement or summer experience.
