RF System Test and Validation Internship (12 Months)

The Airbus Defence & Space Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) department has an opportunity for an Intern to work alongside the Payload Test and Validation workstream. The department is a world leading centre of excellence for Payload AIT activities. Here we build and test the custom part of the satellite called the Payload whether it is for a Telecommunications, Earth observation or Navigation satellites.

The Test and Validation workstream within AIT own all the activities related to test of the Payload. This includes the Electrical Integration (checks of DC harness and equipment functionality), Thermal Tests, Workmanship tests (EMC) and RF performance measurements. The RF performance measurements ensures that the workmanship is to the highest of standards. The final measurements are referred to the “Baseline” tests which are the reference to which all future test phases are referred to. Generally these are after mechanical, environmental tests and after launch. All RF test solutions are designed and developed in house before being deployed to operational use in the cleanroom.

Tasks & accountabilities

Main activities will include:

  • Development, deployment, validation and documentation of Payload RF Test solutions. This includes all efforts required to deliver the payload test solution, including software (typically implemented in LabVIEW) and hardware aspects where applicable, or coordination of these disciplines where appropriate.
  • Provision of technical support to all RF Test related techniques and processes to maximise efficiency, safety and standardisation.
  • First line Payload RF Test System maintenance and repair.
  • Preparation of the test phase documentation (Test Procedures etc).
  • Customisation; development; preparation of dedicated RF Test Systems used during the various test phases.
  • Management of the Payload Test Parameters and the population of dedicated data repository and AIT test databases.

Required skills

Please note our Internships are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.

Essential attributes:

  • Currently studying towards a degree in Engineering or related subject.
  • Basic understanding of programming, including software development methodology and configuration control.
  • Use of Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
  • Able to present technical data to peers in a coherent manner.

Desirable attributes:

  • Familiar with standard RF Test instruments; including Network Analyser and Spectrum Analyser.
  • Use of LabVIEW.
  • Second language (French, Spanish, German).
  • The successful candidate will be subject to UK National Security Clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs.
