The successful candidate will be working within the Airbus Defence and Space Terminals group, designing ground-based and airborne military satellite communications terminals. The role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the cutting edge of technology.

You will study towards a BEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering at Solent University, Southampton.  The course is intended to equip graduates with a relevant range of engineering skills related to electronic engineering and will include the following modules:

  • Circuit principles
  • Analogue and Digital Electronics
  • Manufacturing Principles
  • Microcomputer Systems
  • Electronic Circuits / Design
  • Embedded Systems
  • Automation and Control
  • Data Communications and Networks
  • Digital Signal Processing
  • Radio Systems

The course duration is four years, based on two days per week at University and three days a week applying your knowledge as part of the Airbus team.

What you will be doing: 

The successful candidate must demonstrate that they are capable of being trained to be able to:

  • Work in a logical and constructive manner
  • Define end-to-end satellite communication system architectures
  • Decompose large-scale system architectures into realisable elements
  • Effectively communicate system architectural concepts to implementation teams, in both verbal and written forms
  • Be able to mentally switch between both a system architectural concept level and a ‘bits and bytes’ level in the defined solution.

It would be advantageous for the successful candidate to have:

  • Familiarity with the main components that comprise an end-to-end satellite communications system
  • Knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of satellite communications (LEO, MEO, GEO, etc.)
  • An understanding of what a Link Budget is and to describe the main drivers in a satellite communication context
  • Familiarity with the end-to-end Engineering process (i.e. concept, design, test, implementation and operation)
  • Familiarity with Model-Based System Design techniques

This role may involve travel to European Airbus D&S sites and international Suppliers/Customers. As such you must be able to travel accordingly.

Skills:

In order to be eligible for this exciting apprenticeship opportunity, you must have a minimum of;

  • 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent) including Grade 4/C or above in English and Mathematics or equivalent
  • A-Level (or equivalent) in Maths and at least one further STEM based subject such as Physics, ICT, Computing or Electronics or equivalent 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with excellent communication skills
  • Ability to take ownership of a task and see it through to completion
