To be eligible for our 12 Month work placement you must be a university student who has a placement year option as part of their degree programme.

We run an exciting 12 month placement. Informal training, and work on projects that add true value to the business. The placement scheme is a great place to start a career with Cummins and you will experience not only the skills and work aspect, but the culture and core values of the business.

Support the Quality department in all aspects of customer quality, from the receipt of customer issues to the instigation of corrective action. This involves working closely with internal groups within Darlington to ensure that quality issues are prevented, understood and resolved, whilst maintaining regular communication with CQA Engineers and Plant Quality Engineers at all times.


  • Manage the part returns process and ensure CQA Engineers are informed when parts are returned for their attention. Ensure returned parts are suitably labelled with the issue details.

  • Raise Material Non-Conformances in Cummins Quality Metric Stream.

  • Track quality issues from the MNC being raised to the instigation of corrective action.

  • Manage the audit gaps throughout the assembly line and work towards closing the gaps by setting up additional quality audits/checklist questions at Point of Fit & audit stations.

  • Support TS16949/ISO9001 audit process activity.

  • Take part and help to organise student charity events.

  • Carry out at least 4 hours of community work in the local area.

  • Take part in the Engineering in Schools programme.

Skills And Experience Required:


  • Knowledge of engine parts, fault diagnosis and resolution.

  • Excellent computing skills; Experience with Microsoft Office desirable.

  • Self-motivated and able to prioritise tasks.

  • Flexible and dependable team-member.

  • Ability to communicate confidently, clearly and concisely to relevant stakeholders of all levels.

  • Integrity.

Required Education:

  • Study of an applicable Engineering degree.

Training Provided:

  • Introduction to all systems used by the Quality department, including Oracle, QSOL, IMS & MES.

  • 7-step Problem Solving Bootcamp Training.

  • Student Development Programme.
