The former is designed for all students of any background to apply, whereas the latter has been created to elevate and provide opportunities for students from lower socio-economic backgrounds. The identical programmes aim to help students develop the knowledge and skills required to pursue a successful career in consulting.

You’ll visit our office in Oxfordshire, and spend four weeks learning from Newton consultants and external trainers to support your development and abilities. In both streams, you’ll get a taste of what it’s like to work as a consultant and begin developing the skills you’d need to be a successful consultant.

At the conclusion of the internships, we’d like you to have gained a better understanding of what a career in consulting involves, and hope that you’d like to come and join the Newton team! So, we’ll invite you to fast track through our Graduate Consultant Application process – straight to Final Interview.

The Summer Academy – Pioneering Potential Programme

The Summer Academy – Pioneering Potential Programme has been developed as a new initiative for early years students to develop the skills needed to thrive in business consulting, with a particular focus on providing opportunities and support networks for students from under-represented backgrounds.

Therefore, we’d like to pave the way for students who may not have access to professional opportunities and networks of support to allow them to unleash their full potential and passion for consultancy.

This opportunity is designed to help those who would like to kickstart a career in consulting but are yet to gain any experience in the field. The training aims to develop candidates possessing no relevant knowledge to a level at which they’d be able to contribute to and add value to consulting projects. To best support our Pioneering Potential candidates, we’ll be running additional skills sessions and training in order to elevate candidates and aid their entry into a career in consulting.

To be eligible for this particular opportunity, we will be accepting applications from those who meet one or more of the following criteria points:

  • Free school meal eligible at some point during secondary education
  • Attended a school that is above the regional average for Free School Meals
  • First generation in immediate family to go to university (includes if sibling attended university, parents attended university abroad or parents attended university as mature students)
  • Occupation of main household earner was considered lower socio-economic background at a the age of 14

Our eligibility criteria has been made in line with recommendations from the Social Mobility Foundation around the detection of working-class and lower socio-economic backgrounds in students. The classification of parental occupations has been created using the recommended guidance from the Government pertaining to measuring lower socio-economic backgrounds in the workforce.

What we’ll offer to you

This programme will take place in July 2023, and we are offering a pro rata salary of £21,000 with all travel and accommodation expenses covered by Newton.

Over the four weeks, you’ll learn and apply our core methodology, learning about what it means to be a consultant at Newton and what this looks like in practice. During your first two weeks, you’ll be exposed to training that covers how our consultants solve some of the toughest and most challenging problems in the business world. We’ll host training sessions that centre on professional skills that are applicable to any sector and industry.

Following your two weeks of formative training, you’ll have the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned to a real consultancy project for one of our charity partners. At Newton, we have a strong feedback culture, meaning you’ll be sure to take away a clear understanding of where your personal strengths lie, and key lessons you’ll be able to apply to your future career.

What we will be looking for in you

The Summer Academy is an introduction to consulting so no prior experience is needed, however we're looking to see in you:

  • Strong analytical and conceptual capabilities, but you don't need to be an engineer or mathematician
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
  • Real self-awareness and emotional intelligence
  • The ability to draw meaningful insights from an ocean of information
  • Self-motivation and an eagerness to take on early responsibility
  • A collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • A highly flexible and adaptable approach

The skills and attributes outlined in this overview above are no means exhaustive and we welcome candidates who can bring different relevant experiences to the role.

What’s next?:

The first stage to apply will involve a short application form that doesn’t require the addition of a CV or cover letter! Next, you’ll complete a series of tests involving numerical, verbal and situational judgement tests followed by a video interview. Following this, you’ll attend a virtual Selection Day with other candidates. If you’re successful at Selection Day, we will make you an offer to join us for a summer internship!

We've signed the Gradcracker feedback pledge.

(This means that we will supply feedback if requested after an interview.)
