Job description

Department name: Design Support

The role holder should be a student who is looking for a twelve-month programme within our Design Support Department. The role of the Design Support Department considers the in-service use of Martin-Baker products. The aim of the department is to provide technical support services for customers, as well as ensuring that in-service ‘lessons learnt’ and requirements are translated into the design during the development and qualification of the products. The department is made up of a number of disciplines and considers various aspects of how the product will be used and how technically acceptable it is during all phases of the engineering process, from Design concept, testing, qualification, production and throughout its life cycle.

The position will require you to undertake a wide variety of project related engineering tasks including some or all of the following:

  • Marginality of Success Analysis
  • Reliability Analysis
  • FMECA
  • Maintainability Analysis
  • System Safety Analysis
  • Hazard Analysis
  • Report Writing/Technical Documentation
  • Integrated Logistic Support Analysis
  • Presentation Preparation
  • Use of Excel and other Technical/Analytical Software.

You will be provided with appropriate training/mentoring in support of conducting these tasks.

Secondary activities/tasks:

To undertake any other duties and responsibilities as required/instructed in order to maintain and/or improve the efficiency, quality and service provided by the Design Support Department.

Education & qualifications:

You must be working towards a good degree (1st or Upper 2nd Class Honours) in an appropriate science based subject (e.g. most engineering disciplines such as mechanical engineering, aeronautical or aerospace engineering, systems engineering, physics, mathematics, etc).

Specific/technical skills:

  • Communication skills: able to communicate verbally, in presentation format and in writing
  • Good data analysis skills
  • Good analytical approach to problem solving
  • Good Excel, Word and Powerpoint skills
  • Able to read and visualise technical drawings and schematics.

  • Sound grasp of scientific/engineering theory balanced with a practical approach to engineering problems
  • Attention to detail – thorough, accurate and concern for all the areas involved
  • Driven to achieve results – checks own work, and demonstrates a positive approach
  • Judgement and decision making – evaluates decisions
  • Planning and organising - effective time management skills and prioritising tasks
  • Analysis and problem solving – sees basic relationships and reacts positively
  • Willing to adapt to a variety of tasks
  • Team player – with the ability to work independently
  • Self-starter
  • Enthusiastic
  • Motivated to learn new skills.

For all successful candidates, Martin-Baker will undertake background security checks. As part of this, we will need to confirm your identity, employment history and address history to cover the past five years as well as your nationality, immigration status and criminal record. For positions that require Security Clearance, the successful candidate must hold or be willing to obtain security clearance up to the relevant level for the role.
