Exciting early career opportunities at Leonardo

Your story starts here.

How this role fits in

We are looking for talented, enthusiastic people who understand the importance of communication, who are able to work well as part of a team and also on their own initiative. You will have the drive and commitment to work through difficult problems to find the right engineering solutions.

Role description

As part of this Apprenticeship programme, you will join the Luton Software Engineering community which is home to the Electronic Warfare (EW) and Major Air Programmes (MAP) lines of business. A world leader in electronic systems, our advanced technology is defining the next generation of products for both manned and unmanned aircraft platforms, including airborne radars and sensors, protection and countermeasure systems and integrated mission systems.

We are looking for the next generation of motivated and adaptable software engineers to join our growing software community and work with our teams of world-leading experts in a fast-paced and dynamically changing environment:

  • Cutting-Edge: You could be developing state-of-the-art airborne electronic systems for the most advanced fighter aircraft ever to be made or be involved in creating the next generation of Leonardo products.
  • Innovative: You will be involved with novel product development and emerging technologies that have been supported by Leonardo's £200m annual investment in research and development.
  • Challenging: You will push the boundaries of innovation, technology, and the ingenuity of our engineering community to bring about a step change in performance and capability of our airborne electronic systems.
  • Our technology helps define and extend the capability of the Eurofighter Typhoon.
  • Our research and innovation is defining and shaping future Air, Land and Sea products and platforms.
  • Our life-saving defensive aid suites are fitted on all of the UK’s military helicopters, including the Army’s battle-tested Apache and the Royal Navy’s new AW159 Wildcats.
  • Our products help return service men and women safely home to their families.

What you will do

Involved in all phases of the software engineering lifecycle you will be exposed to the latest tools, technologies and processes and have the opportunity to influence the future path of software development within Leonardo.

This could be developing real-time embedded software on a complex aircraft protection system, creating sophisticated analysis and support tools running in a PC desktop environment or contributing ideas to innovate the next generation of products.

Alongside this, you will also study with one of our partner Universities towards achievement of BSc (Hons) or BEng (Hons) degree in an appropriate engineering discipline through a mixture of work based learning, distance learning and day release at University. On completion you should have met the requirements for Incorporated Engineer as part of the way to gaining Chartered Engineer status.

Note: This Apprenticeship assumes the candidate has little professional engineering experience is NOT suitable for candidates who already have an engineering degree.

Key Responsibility Areas

During your employment, you will be required to share your time between the workplace and university. You will:

  • Grow your knowledge of software engineering as part of an Integrated Project Team.
  • Develop practical skills in engineering design and development for complex systems,
  • Understanding key processes and technologies.
  • Support early careers activities - our apprentices and graduates have the opportunity to work as STEM ambassadors in schools, colleges and universities
  • Commit to the successful completion of all your academic modules and assignments in support of the Apprenticeship standard (Ref:ST0119).
  • Be given experience of all stages of the software development lifecycle and an awareness of other engineering departments who support the software engineers. Subjects will include: hardware-software interface, data communication, networking and security, software configuration and release management; and subjects in business, personal skills and project management.

Who would suit this role?

Leonardo values people that look to always develop throughout their career and along with an eager willingness to learn, a successful apprenticeship with Leonardo involves a drive to deliver results, sometimes from your own initiative, a patience for problem solving, as well as a need to comply with safety instructions and clear process compliance at all times.

We view commitment to the programme and learning objectives very highly.
