On joining the Leonardo graduate programme, you will unlock a wealth of development opportunities and further learning. You will receive mentoring, coaching and support to achieve your personal goals and accreditation from your professional body.
At Leonardo, we have some of the Industry’s most sophisticated technology at our fingertips, and we rely on having the very best employees to maintain our competitive edge. As one of our graduates, you will be working for a company at the cutting edge of technology, as well as enhancing your skills and business acumen, opening up your horizons to the diverse and dynamic ways in which your degree can be used.
We have created a programme across our UK sites that value those who continuously ask questions and look to resolve problems through creative and innovative thinking. We will demand a high degree of customer focus and work performance from you in order to meet our operational challenges.
Leonardo are looking for an applicant with energy and enthusiasm to join its team of Test Engineers based at Basildon. At Basildon we to stand at the forefront of precision guidance, secure communications and imaging systems technology and are developing a reputation for our innovative solutions in both the commercial smart infrastructure market and with military open system architectures.
The Test Engineering group are responsible for developing and maintaining test equipment used to characterise and test our wide range of products, including Thermal Imaging Common Modules and Radio Frequency Communications, in both production and in development phases. As such, Test Engineers play a key role in ensuring that our products meet the technical specifications required of them throughout the product lifecycle, often spanning many years.
When working as a Graduate Test Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining some of our production test systems, ensuring that they are operating normally and are available with a high level of reliability. When issues arise with the test equipment, a key responsibility of your role will be to identify the problems and to plan repairs or changes so that the equipment can be made available again. This will involve working with other Engineers in the team as required who will have specific experience in disciplines such as test system design and architecture, software and product knowledge.
As well as supporting existing production test equipment, you will also get the opportunity to work as part of a team developing new test solutions for new products. Here you will work alongside the product design team to understand the requirements of the product itself, and work on developing those requirements into a capable test solution.
Through the role you will be able to develop experience of formal test processes used within the defence and space industry so that product qualification programmes can be planned and executed. This may give you the opportunity to conduct environmental testing (e.g. temperature cycling, mechanical vibration and shock) on new products, and to contribute to the formal design qualification reports for those products.
The role in Test Engineering covers a range of disciplines and so candidates that enjoy both laboratory based work and office based data analysis will find the role rewarding. The role involves a great deal of team working and as such, candidates who enjoy working with others and who have strong written and verbal communication skills will find the role enjoyable. Problem solving is also a key skill within the role, so if you have proven ability to solve problems, perhaps in final year projects, or in laboratory testing, that will give you a good foundation for the role.
Please note that in order to apply for this opportunity you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance. Normally this is to the level of Security Check (typically known as “SC”) for our business.
All of our roles require a minimum of an upper Second class Bachelors/Integrated Masters degree, or a higher degree, such as a MSc or PhD. In all cases the subject should be Engineering or Data Science.
A candidate with experience in working with or developing data acquisition equipment will be well suited to the role. In addition, experience with using or developing LabVIEW is beneficial, although not critical.
Any experience in working with optical or RF systems will be an advantage as much of the testing is done using these technologies.
Some knowledge of infrared physics and electro-optic detectors would be ideal, but a passion for learning about new products and technologies will be a key part to your success in this role on our graduate programme.
