See where you could start making a difference.

Programme Management

If you fancy getting your teeth stuck into a multi-million pound budget, then we’re looking for people like you.

Fast-track to the top of the career ladder on our programme management scheme. Are you ambitious? Keen to take on responsibility? Fancy being in charge of multi-million pound budgets?

Programme management graduates are pivotal to ensuring the delivery of our big capital projects.

From modernising one of the biggest treatment plants in Europe, to being in charge of connecting West Cumbria to our network via laying a pipe through the Lake District National Park. These are the types of projects you could be responsible for.

So what makes our scheme stand out from the crowd?

We’ve got unique training schemes, and by joining us you’ll be working towards professional qualifications and ultimately chartered status of the AMP RPP status. Most of our graduates actually reach chartership just a year after completing their graduate scheme.

Working closely with our engineering design teams and contractors, you'll make sure the project progresses well, along with meeting external stakeholders and the public to champion our work. You’ll also experience project delivery from a design management, contract and commercial management, programme controls and project coordination perspective.

One thing’s for sure, no day will be the same. As you progress, you’ll be taking on more responsibility and working independently on a range of projects. From small value schemes, to the ones where you can really get stuck into that are high profile and complex.

Ian, project delivery graduate

“The project I’ve worked on that has me most excited is the Haweswater Outage Project. I’m really looking forward to taking out such a major part of our water infrastructure and ensuring that we make the repairs required to keep water flowing to our customers. “Another highlight would be managing my first major project. I’ve been working on a project at our Fleetwood wastewater treatment works in the early investigation and design phases. I’ve been managing all the risks and putting together the business case, which I will shortly be presenting for further investment. It’s been a really busy and stressful time, but I’ve really enjoyed it and learned more than I imagined I could about project management and my own capability.”

Engineering Programme

An award-winning programme, which is ICHME accredited, and you’ll get a fast-track to chartership. Just some of the reasons why our engineering scheme is well worth it.

You’ll benefit from the shared knowledge and expertise of working with colleagues across all of the engineering disciplines whilst also developing your own specialist skills.

Chris, graduate mechanical engineer.

“As an engineer I wanted to push towards chartership, and UU actively encourages that by having a well-established programme that is approved by the IMechE, as well as putting in place all the support mechanisms that a new graduate would need “The graduate scheme is a really flexible system that takes you across the business and pushes you. It’s a really good development opportunity which exposes you to leadership, budgets, the capital programme, operations and the wider business.”

Future Leaders Programme

Think you could you be the next CEO, or director of water? If so we want you!

We’re looking for the future leaders of our business. If you think you have what it takes then our leadership scheme is the one for you.

This role is a fantastic opportunity. You’ll see yourself developing throughout the scheme and you’ll be taking charge of budgets, effectively managing a team and seeing your hard work pay off when a project you’re in charge of is delivered on time, on budget and to a high quality.

We’ve got ambitious plans for our business and we want you to help us drive these plans forward.

In your first two years you’ll be leading projects that are designed for you to get to grips with the businesses. You’ll learn how we work and just what goes into delivering water to customers’ taps. You’ll not be alone, and a mentor will providing you support, helping you to succeed in your career.

And not only that, you’ll also be working towards an extra qualification too. We encourage you to realise your potential and seek charted status from a body of your choice.

It’ll take some hard work and dedication to reach the top levels, but if you’ve got the drive and ambition, come and join us.

Danisha - Wastewater Graduate

"My first placement on the graduate programme involved helping to deliver a multi-million pound project which aimed to modernise wastewater treatment works across United Utilities. The project enabled works to be remotely monitored and controlled from a local hub, delivering huge benefits for site performance and efficiency.”
