In support of this, as part of the Polypipe Plus Graduate Management Programme we are looking for a Polymer Technologist / Materials Scientist.

Traditional build methods can often result in constraints within the design of projects.

Once established in the programme you will join the Civils research and development team to support the development of the company’s materials technology in line with evolving British and European Standards.

The role will involve maintaining and developing the company’s material strategy, developing new material formulations, increasing the company’s use of recycled materials, looking at machine optimisation and aiding with the sourcing of raw materials to optimise product quality and performance, but also protect the company from increasing prime raw materials costs.

You will spend your time between our two manufacturing sites at Horncastle, Lincolnshire and Loughborough, Leicestershire reporting directly to the Marketing & Development Director and by the completion of the programme will be responsible for: -

  • Managing the company’s materials quality standards, to ensure product quality is maintained but materials costs are at all times minimised relative to performance requirements.
  • Reviewing and developing as required appropriate material specifications for all products with a regard to material availability, cost and product quality.
  • Providing support to the business in identifying materials supply partners and to work with new and existing materials suppliers to help them improve materials quality and to help the business source more recycled materials.
  • Working with the operations team to optimise outputs from production lines and deliver process driven product development.
  • Representing the company at British and European Standards meetings.
  • Researching and understanding current state of the art materials technology relevant to the company’s products.
  • Carrying out materials R&D to develop alternative material formulations with regards to lowering our materials costs and improving product durability and lifetime, without impacting on product functionality or quality.
  • Carrying out materials R&D with regards to the lifetime, durability and sustainability of recycled materials.
  • Organising and performing product testing on all products which have material developments.
  • Managing the company’s polymer laboratory and its equipment.
  • Supporting the NPD team in the choice of materials for new product developments.

Person Specification

  • A graduate within the polymer / materials scientist field.
  • Extensive knowledge of polymer chemistry and rheology.
  • An understanding of extrusion and or injection moulding would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of working with recycled materials, particularly HDPE, PP or UPVC would be an advantage.
  • An understanding of materials improvements which can be made utilising polymer fillers, or an understanding of polymer compounding would be an advantage.
  • An understanding of materials control and financial measurement process would be a benefit.
  • Good communicator, both written and orally with good attention to detail.
