Corporate Social Responsibility

Environment, Energy & Waste

Diamond Light Source considers the effective management of its environmental policy including energy usage to be an important corporate responsibility. As such, Diamond is committed to the ongoing improvement of its environmental performance and the minimisation of the sycnhrotron's environmental impact.

Since our initial construction, Diamond has both enhanced the efficiency of existing equipment and limited the amount of equipment needed to run without affecting machine operations.
The facility has also installed 416 solar panels, estimated to save over 80,000 kWh annually.

These energy saving measures have reduced Diamond’s electrical consumption by approximately 14% each year.

Furthermore, the synchrotron encourages our designers and contractors to adopt energy efficient measures when designing new equipment for the machine; this is to ensure ongoing uplift in efficiency.
Diamond is committed to minimising the environmental impact of the synchrotron; as such we look to prioritise sustainability in all areas of construction and operation of the facility.

Diamond in the Community

Diamond is partly taxpayer funded; as such we consider it important to engage and inspire the public with the synchrotron. We do this in a number of ways.

Diamond hosts regular visits for members of the public and for schools. We have 5 open days every year, when people of all ages get the chance to see inside the walls of the synchrotron, venture into the beamline tunnels, and explore the experimental stations. We also have a comprehensive series of events for schoolchildren, featuring workshops, seminars and meet the scientist sessions.

Diamond seeks to nurture strong ties with the local community in Harwell. The synchrotron has good links with local and community groups, and strives to involve local people in discussions about new and ongoing developments at the facility.

Diamond seeks to be a figurehead for the scientific community. The synchrotron is an awe-inspiring facility and, in our relations with the community, we look to provide a compelling example of what science can achieve.
