Environmental, Social and Governance

Building a better future together is Tilbury Douglas ESG strategy, setting out how we deliver responsible projects that create environmental, social and economic value for our customers, people, supply chain and local communities.

Our ESG strategy shapes the way we deliver projects, support our people, strengthen communities and protect the environment. It helps us make responsible decisions, measure our impact and create lasting value for our customers, colleagues, supply chain partners and the communities where we work.

At Tilbury Douglas, building a better future together is at the heart of everything we do.

Environment, Sustainability and Carbon

The construction industry has an important role to play in tackling climate change, protecting natural resources and reducing environmental impact.

The Environmental pillar of our ESG strategy reflects our commitment to protecting the environment and delivering more sustainable outcomes across every stage of our projects.
We are reducing our environmental impact through carbon reduction, biodiversity enhancement, responsible resource management and sustainable procurement.

At Tilbury Douglas, we're committed to making a difference through the way we design, build and deliver our projects.

Our environmental commitments include:

  • Biodiversity: We're committed to delivering a minimum of 10% biodiversity net gain across applicable projects, helping to protect, restore and enhance natural habitats.
  • Reducing waste: We are working towards zero waste to landfill through waste reduction, reuse and recycling, with a target to divert a minimum of 98% of waste from landfill by 2029.
  • Responsible sourcing: We work with our supply chain to implement carbon reduction plans, promote sustainable materials, reduce emissions and adopt lower-carbon construction methods.

Sustainability and carbon: Net Zero at Tilbury Douglas

Our sustainability team is a division of ESG, that support the business in driving sustainable practices through our own operations and for our clients. Our role is to position Tilbury Douglas as industry leaders in carbon management, driving sustainability and carbon strategy for the business and supporting our clients with their Net Zero ambitions

Tilbury Douglas has set its net zero target for 2040 and have begun implementing strategies to achieve this:

Carbon neutrality: We achieved carbon neutral accreditation for our operations in 2024 independently certified by Achilles

  • Reducing direct emissions: Enhancing energy efficiency, using low-carbon equipment, and implementing energy-saving initiatives on-site.
  • Partnering with sustainable suppliers: We work closely with our supply chain partners to ensure that our procurement practices align with our sustainability goals.
  • Sustainable transport solutions: We are integrating electric vehicles, hybrid fleets, and low-emission construction machinery into our operations.

At Tilbury Douglas, we believe construction is about more than buildings and infrastructure. It's about creating places where people and communities can thrive, protecting our environment and making a positive difference for future generations.

Social

The Social pillar of our ESG strategy reflects our commitment to creating opportunities for our people, supporting local communities and delivering lasting social value.

We recognise that construction has the power to transform lives. Through the projects we deliver, the people we employ, the suppliers we support and the communities we engage with, we create social, economic and environmental value that lasts long after project completion.

Our approach focuses on improving social mobility, strengthening local economies and creating a more diverse and inclusive construction industry.

By working collaboratively with our customers, communities, educational institutions and supply chain partners, we will create meaningful, measurable and evidenced outcomes that improve lives, strengthen local economies and create lasting opportunities for future generations.

Through this approach, we will ensure every project leaves a positive legacy that extends beyond the built asset and contributes to building a better future together.

  • Improving social mobility: Through early engagement, targeted partnerships and inclusive employment practices, we are committed to improving social mobility, raising aspirations and creating pathways into employment.
  • Strengthening local economies and supply chains: Our Inclusive Procurement Strategy ensures social and economic value are considered alongside commercial decisions, encouraging local and SME participation and widening access to our supply chain.
  • Creating a diverse and inclusive industry: Creating an inclusive industry is not simply about representation; it is about creating a culture where everyone feels valued, respected and able to fulfil their potential.

Governance

The Governance pillar of our ESG strategy ensures we operate responsibly, ethically and transparently, providing strong leadership and accountability across our business

How we achieve our goals matters just as much as what we achieve. Good governance means operating responsibly, making ethical decisions and being accountable to our people, customers and communities.

At Tilbury Douglas, we have clear policies, management systems and independent assurance processes to maintain high standards across our business.

Our commitments include:

  • Ethical business practices: Acting with integrity, fairness and transparency.
  • Human rights: Protecting workers' rights and maintaining zero tolerance towards modern slavery.
  • Accountability: Ensuring clear responsibilities and responsible decision making throughout our business.
  • Quality and safety: Maintaining recognised industry standards and external accreditations.
