As a Mechanical Engineer based in the department of mechanical analysis, working in mechanical stress and dynamic analysis teams or on placement with department internal customers and key stakeholders, you shall be contributing to the success of a wide variety of space missions, that range from the highly scientific space exploration of other planets in the form of the ESA EXOMARS Mars Rover mission, to the intensely competitive provision of global telecommunications via the Airbus Defence and Space EUROSTAR 3000 and 3000neo family of spacecraft.

With space hardware design, manufacture and test all covered by the scope of operations on the Stevenage site and so accessible to witness, support and contribute to, developed shall be a wide variety of technical skills in mechanical, aerospace and structures engineering with reference to your domain of analysis, and non-technical skills that relate to your responsibilities to communicate and deliver your activities to set technical and operational objectives.

Mechanical Engineers are involved in producing innovative designs, using the latest materials and Computer Aided Engineering systems to meet ever-increasing expectations in 21st century living.

This course will develop the learner’s mechanical engineering expertise and professional skills across a broad curriculum with modules including thermofluid mechanics & heat transfer, mechanical engineering design and manufacturing strategy.

This course maps to the Product Design and Development Engineer apprenticeship standard.

What you will be doing:

This apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of on the job training at Airbus, and university based learning on day release over the duration of the 4 year Programme.

Key activities of the industry based work of this apprenticeship include:

  • Proactively seek to broaden your knowledge base, which includes your understanding of space hardware technologies, their purpose and composition.
  • In a systems, hardware or components environment, understand the detail principles of mechanical and stress analysis and more broadly of wider design, manufacture and test.
  • Build and demonstrate familiarisation with company standards, procedures, processes and work practices through on and off the job training and development.
  • Learn the discipline of predominately mechanical analysis, but also according to placements undertaken the influence to and from internal customers and stakeholders.
  • Understand the performance of designed, manufactured and tested hardware through activities including mechanical test prediction, preparation, support and assessment.
  • Authoring technical documents in particular reports recording and driving the design, development and verification, over the whole or parts of the product lifecycle.

Skills:

Please note that, due to the funded nature of this Programme, applicants with undergraduate degrees are not eligible.

You will need:

  • UCAS Points - 104
  • A-Level - BCC:  A levels to include Maths and either Physics or Technology or engineering based subjects excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking
  • BTEC – DMM: Engineering BTEC Extended Diploma with a Distinction in the Further Maths unit or equivalent
  • Or Equivalent qualifications

The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • Professional commitment: Demonstrating a personal and professional commitment to society, their profession and the environment, adopting a set of values and behaviours that will maintain and enhance the reputation of the profession.
