"It is wonderful to work at a firm where staff are encouraged and supported to work with local communities."
Arup is a firm that keeps people at the heart of its ethos. What attracted me the most is its focus on people before anything else. I knew that it had a strong reputation for its work in the built environment, and it’s wonderful to be a part of this incredible institution. I enjoy its diverse and inclusive culture.

Arup allows its staff to undertake research into areas that are important to them as individuals. I’ve have been awarded funding that has allowed me to undertake research on the destruction of the built environment and the mechanisms communities create whilst living in warzones. I hope this research creates an impact on the ground to support and help civilians in their struggle to save and sustain what remains of their cities and towns. It is wonderful to work somewhere that staff are encouraged and supported to work with local communities.
My current community engagement project focuses on the creation of educational and learning materials about the toll of war in different regions, destruction and reconstruction of cultural heritage, and the ways cities and towns are rebuilt. These materials will be free for anyone to use and will be shared with communities whose homelands have been damaged. I am doing this project whilst having an Honorary Research Associate position at the University of Oxford.
Community engagement projects are often grass-rooted and led with passion and appreciation of the meaning they create for communities. My ultimate goal and aspiration is to make a difference on the ground through the creation of new knowledge, publications, writings and learning materials.
