Graduate MEICA Engineer

Electrical, Electronics, C&I.

At Tilbury Douglas, you won’t just be starting your career – you’ll be helping to deliver projects that make a real difference to people and communities.

As a Graduate MEICA Engineer (Electrical) within our Infrastructure team, you’ll gain hands-on experience from day one, working alongside experienced engineers and project teams. You’ll support the development, coordination and delivery of Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation systems that keep vital water infrastructure operating safely, efficiently and reliably.

Why we love construction
Hear from our colleagues about why they love working in construction and their advice on how to gain work experience and get into the sector!

With an electrical engineering focus, you’ll develop your specialist knowledge while gaining a broader understanding of how mechanical, instrumentation, control and automation systems work together to form complete operational solutions.

This is a site-based role, with your initial project expected to be based in the Southwest region. As you develop, you’ll have opportunities to gain experience across a variety of water and wastewater projects, clients and locations, helping you build broad technical experience and a strong foundation for your engineering career.

You’ll learn from experienced professionals, take on real responsibility and see first-hand how engineering solutions progress from design through to installation, testing, commissioning and handover.

What you’ll be doing

As a Graduate MEICA Engineer, you’ll develop your skills across the engineering and project lifecycle, gaining the experience you need to progress towards professional accreditation.

No two days are the same and, with the support of experienced colleagues, you’ll:

  • Support the design, coordination and delivery of MEICA engineering solutions across water and wastewater projects.
  • Develop your understanding of electrical power, distribution, control and protection systems used within water infrastructure.
  • Assist with the review of electrical designs, drawings, specifications, calculations and technical information.
  • Gain exposure to electrical equipment including switchgear, motor control centres, motors, variable speed drives and associated systems.
  • Develop an understanding of instrumentation, control and automation systems, and how they are used to monitor and control water and wastewater processes.
  • Build your knowledge of mechanical plant and equipment, and how electrical and mechanical systems integrate to form complete operational solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with mechanical, process, civil, design and construction teams to develop coordinated engineering solutions.
  • Support design reviews and help identify opportunities to improve safety, buildability, efficiency and whole-life performance.
  • Assist with the coordination of specialist suppliers, subcontractors and equipment manufacturers.
  • Support inspections, testing and commissioning activities, helping to demonstrate that systems are installed correctly and perform as intended.
  • Help identify, record and resolve technical issues during installation and commissioning.
  • Support the preparation and maintenance of engineering documentation, technical records, commissioning information and handover documentation.
  • Develop your understanding of electrical safety, safe systems of work, and relevant engineering standards and regulations.
  • Gain experience in digital engineering, sustainability, energy efficiency and emerging technologies within the water sector.
  • Build strong working relationships with project teams, clients, designers, suppliers and supply chain partners.

Why this role?

This isn’t just about electrical systems – it’s about understanding how mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control and automation technologies work together to keep essential water infrastructure operating safely, efficiently and reliably.

You’ll see engineering solutions progress from design through to installation, testing, commissioning and handover, gaining practical experience of the systems and technologies used to treat and manage water and wastewater.

With an electrical engineering focus, you’ll develop specialist knowledge while gaining broader MEICA experience, giving you a strong understanding of how different engineering disciplines integrate to create complete operational systems.

With mentoring, structured training and support towards professional accreditation with a relevant engineering institution, such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), you’ll develop the technical expertise, problem-solving abilities and people skills to become a trusted engineering professional. You’ll be on a clear pathway towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.

As your knowledge and confidence grow, you’ll take on increasing engineering responsibility and build a strong foundation for a long-term career in MEICA engineering and the water sector.

What we’re looking for

We want to hear from people who are passionate about making a difference through engineering and the built environment. You’ll bring:

  • A degree, or be expected to graduate in 2027, in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Control and Instrumentation Engineering or a closely related discipline (2:2 or above)
  • A full UK driving licence, or be working towards obtaining one by February 2027.
  • A genuine interest in electrical engineering and a willingness to develop your knowledge across the wider MEICA discipline.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with a practical and logical approach
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage with a wide range of people.
  • A collaborative mindset, with enthusiasm to learn and take on responsibility.
  • Previous placement or site experience is desirable but not essential.

What we offer

Start your career with a programme designed to help you learn, develop and succeed from day one.
