Hi! I’m Tom, a graduate engineer at WSP.

I graduated with a master’s in civil engineering in 2020 and am currently a year and a half through the graduate development programme.

I sit within the Local Government discipline which groups all of WSP’s frameworks delivering engineering services for Local Authorities across the UK. I work on contracts with Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council on the south coast and am currently involved with the design of a series of sustainable transport improvements across the region (lots of cycling and walking!)

Alongside my role I lead WSP’s global innovation programme, Future Ready, within the Local Government discipline, which aims to ensure all our designs and advice consider future trends in climate, society, technology and resources.

Why should you join my team?

The Local Government discipline has offered me a truly unique experience in civil engineering. With all our projects revolving around one Client, WSP has built a series of very strong relationships with local authorities which makes the work incredibly engaging. I feel far more involved across the wider strategic and political setting of my projects in addition to the technical design. 

We sit in an exciting position to build up expertise in the local area and support councils with wider nationally relevant issues, including Net Zero ambitions, the Levelling Up agenda and digitisation. Most importantly to me, working within local government has allowed me to make a tangible difference to the place I live and work; a section of the cycle infrastructure I’m designing travels right outside my house!

I’ve had great support from my team in pursuing my interests and exploring opportunities within the business to develop these. I’m passionate about how we design sustainable urban spaces and am particularly interested in how the public realm impacts community mental health and wellbeing, something WSP’s Future Ready programme supports too.

Outside of my team WSP has a huge number of networks to support colleges at varying stages in their careers, and across a spectrum of diversity characteristics. The Professional Growth Network (PGN) for Early Career Professionals runs an engaging programme of events and opportunities to connect, develop and represent professionals across the business at the beginning of their careers.

I’ve also taken part in WSP’s wellbeing programme, THRIVE, and LGBTQ+ Network, VIBE, which both exist to provide support and representation. WSP has been a great place to start my career, the opportunities and support available locally and across the business have given me all I need to begin my career in the best way I can.
