I graduated from the University of Manchester in December 2014. As my master’s degree in particular focused on environmental monitoring and modelling I began the job search with a keen interest in looking for modelling jobs in order to develop the skills I learned at university.
My first job was at a small environmental consultancy firm where I was working as a Graduate Air Quality Consultant. Although I found Air Quality interesting, I found myself yearning to go back to what I knew, and being educated in Manchester, naturally many of our courses had focused on water, from studying its sources and modelling the impacts of water including flooding and water quality.
Additionally being at a small firm, there was no real career development and I was eager to work for a company that had a structured development programme with set career goals in mind. This was when a friend from university told me of Stantec; the place where she worked as a modeller, she told me about Stantec’s Professional Development Programme.
This peaked my interest and I began to research Stantec and was impressed by the size of the company and the diversity of the projects. I was also taken with the company’s values and their determination to make the world a better place and to come up with sustainable solutions that benefit the environment.
I joined Stantec in June 2015 and although I had no experience in water distribution modelling I found that the skills that I have learned at university and as an air quality consultant were readily transferable to cleanwater modelling.
Since joining Stantec I have been involved in a variety of projects for several different clients. This work has included zonal modelling, model calibration, growth studies and mains replacement. I have also been involved in a trunk main leakage project where I had to investigate the possible causes of leakage in the trunk main area. This involved checking calculations on water balances to see whether unaccounted for water values were a product of faulty metering or whether it was legitimate leakage. It was then my responsibility to mobilise the validation and leak detection teams to make sure the area was hydraulically tight and subsequently find leaks in the trunk main area.
As part of Stantec’s Professional Development Programme I am actively working towards Chartership with CIWEM.
