About the team - Chemistry (Atmospheres):

A chemist qualified to degree level or higher to work within the QinetiQ Chemistry (Atmospheres) team. The team provide air purification and atmosphere monitoring support to the MOD, overseas navies and commercial organisations that operate in challenging enclosed environments such as submarines, ships and armoured fighting vehicles.

The role involves the practical laboratory investigation of technologies to maintain a safe breathable atmosphere. The post-holder will identify technology with potential for use in sealed environments, design and build test apparatus, conduct laboratory assessments and present findings to customers in Technical Reports.

Tasks involve instrumental chemical analysis, gas monitor evaluation and enclosed ventilation system computer modelling. Occasional off‑site working is required to provide service support to atmosphere monitoring equipment on submarines alongside or undertake gas concentration measurements during equipment trials.

Successful outcomes of this role:

  • Understand customer requirements and deliver technical work to quality, time and budget.
  • Expand the range and volume of the work undertaken by the Chemistry (Atmospheres) team.
  • Achieve the scale-up of novel air purification concepts into Technology Demonstrators for field evaluation.

Challenges:

  • Provide innovative solutions to customer requirements.
  • Develop and maintain atmosphere control technical knowledge.

Essential Education, Qualifications and Training:

  • Good degree or higher degree in chemistry.
  • Experience of instrumental analysis and/or contaminant removal technologies would be advantageous.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Full UK driving license.
  • Sole UK Nationality.

Essential Personal Qualities and Behavioural Requirements:

  • A team player with the ability to work without constant supervision.
  • A flexible approach and strong drive to achieve results.
  • Able to meet QinetiQ corporate behaviours of Listen, Focus and Keep my Promises.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Working towards membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Mandatory:

  • In accordance with our National Security Vetting requirements, all applicants must also be eligible for SC clearance as a minimum.

Location:

The role is laboratory-based in Gosport, Hampshire, UK. Although there is some flexibility in remote working (for example, during report writing or training), most of the time the candidate will be expected to be on site.
