Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering and engineering management dealing with complex systems over their life cycles from concept & requirements through architecture & design, realisation, test & acceptance and through-life operation.
A Systems Engineer might specialise in one or more of these areas or provide technical leadership and management across the lifecycle. At its core systems engineering utilises systems thinking principles to organise a body of knowledge in a complex environment.
Systems Engineers will focus on the system and not on a component requiring a distinct specialism (e.g. software, electrical, mechanical or IT network) and define and optimise boundaries or interfaces in which other disciplines operate.
Systems Engineers would expect to work closely with business and project managers, teams of engineering and scientific subject matter experts, specialists in safety, security, reliability, product certification and procurement. The role also involves a high degree of interaction with customers and end users.
