Learn about what we do at QinetiQ...

Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering and engineering management dealing with complex systems over their life cycles from concept & requirements through architecture & design, realisation, test & acceptance and through-life operation.

A Systems Engineer might specialise in one or more of these areas or provide technical leadership and management across the lifecycle. At its core systems engineering utilises systems thinking principles to organise a body of knowledge in a complex environment.

Systems Engineers will focus on the system and not on a component requiring a distinct specialism (e.g. software, electrical, mechanical or IT network) and define and optimise boundaries or interfaces in which other disciplines operate.

Systems Engineers would expect to work closely with business and project managers, teams of engineering and scientific subject matter experts, specialists in safety, security, reliability, product certification and procurement. The role also involves a high degree of interaction with customers and end users.

Systems Engineers:

  • Focus on the problem as a whole and translate this into measurable requirements
  • Model the whole solution and investigate alternatives
  • Consider the total system lifecycle “birth to death”
  • Manage complexity and risk

Knowledge, skills and personal qualities required:

  • A suitable recognised science or engineering related qualification at a degree level or higher in accordance with the specific posts
  • Good interpersonal, influencing, analytical and team working skills
  • Good planning, organisation and coordinating abilities
  • The ability to learn quickly to develop domain knowledge appropriate to the tasks required
  • Customer facing skills: good listening and questioning skills to fully understand customers’ requirements and problems, good interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Good written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills.

Other requirements:

  • This role is likely to involve travel in UK and possibly overseas and occasional periods away from home.
  • Graduates are expected to demonstrate objectivity, impartiality, detachment and integrity in delivering their contribution to QinetiQ’s goals.
