Job description:

The QinetiQ Mechanical Engineering discipline consists of around 300 engineers, scientists and technicians, working within three distinct Groups; Naval Architecture and Maritime Engineering, Stress, Structures and Advanced Products and Design and Fabrication skill groups.

Sites & roles:

Site: Farnborough

At the Farnborough site we have the Stress, Structures, Advanced Products, Wind Tunnel and Space teams. We work in the Air and Space, Maritime, Land and Product domains, providing assurance and assessment for a range of products and structures. With specialisms in Design, Non-Destructive test, Strength, Deformations, Resonance (including Vibration), and Life Assessment under static and dynamic conditions.

This is often used to define maintenance periods and design assurance. The team also has experience in progressing technical readiness levels of novel designs.

The roles are in the design, air structural integrity, mechanical systems analysis and stress and structures teams.

What we do

QinetiQ is a company of over 6,000 people dedicated to being on the side of their customers.

Site : Haslar

Our Haslar teams consist of Naval Architects, Designers, Marine and Maritime Engineers and Hydrodynamicists with capability in all aspects of surface ship and submarine platform concept design through to in-service support. This multidiscipline Group has specialisms in hydrodynamic testing and SMERAS (Submarine Escape, Rescue, Abandonment and Survivability) using both Haslar and international test facilities but also encompasses many transversal capabilities in structures, CFD, data analysis, requirements generation, noise and vibration, safety cases, trials and control systems.

The role is with our mechanical design team, and may also involving working at our Farnborough site.

Site: Malvern

Our teams at Malvern provide Mechanical Design, bespoke manufacturing & assembly into technology systems such as RF and optical, vacuum, surveillance, high energy and integration into handheld low power devices, land, air and marine platforms. The role is with our mechanical design team.

Site: Shoeburyness

The teams at Shoeburyness are focused on the Environmental Test Centre (ETC). Our UKAS accredited ETC offers an entire suite of environmental testing of munitions for Land, Sea & Air, ranging across Dynamic Testing (Impact, Vibration and Drop), Climatic Testing (Hot and Cold environments, Immersion, Spray and sand conditions) and Radiographic Imagery. Outside of the UKAS accredited testing we also provide CT Scanning and Sectioning facilities.

The role will be to lead set-up and conduct of environmental test programs, data processing, reporting and ensuring that customer deliverables meet the required standards.

Site : Rosyth

Our team at QinetiQ Rosyth originated as the Admiralty Underwater Explosion Research Establishment (UNDEX) in 1943.

Its original aims were to discover how to make Royal Navy warships more resistant to underwater explosions and shock (both contact and non-contact) and how to make better use of underwater explosives in attack. The forth estuary between Fife and Edinburgh along with the vicinity of the dockyard being an ideal location for the establishment. Its work developed to include research on surface ship and submarine structures, acoustic noise reduction, equipment shock testing and the vulnerability of ships and submarines to both above and underwater weapons.

This strong tradition and knowledge of ship and submarine structures is still true today with the structural assessment, Integrity and NDT team work under the Maritime Strategic Capability Agreement. The MSCA ensures, maintains and facilitates the capabilities of this expertise for our MOD customer and has often been vital in assisting with emergent issues and has often facilitated in submarines being able to go to sea.

The role will be with our Structural Assessment and Structural Integrity teams.

Who we want:

Our Mechanical Engineering teams are looking to recruit proactive, passionate and forward thinking people who are looking to help improve today & shape tomorrow.

You will come from a STEM background with a keen interest in engineering; be well organised, methodical and logical in your approach, comfortable communicating with customers and team members using diplomacy and negotiation skills.

Required: Achieved or on track to achieve a bachelor’s degree or higher degree in a related discipline.
