Where the STEM jobs are
Gradcracker works here's the proof
"Looking back I can't believe how much I have packed into my first 18 months with the company!"
I joined the QinetiQ Maritime Graduate Development Scheme in September 2013 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Looking back I can't believe how much I have packed into my first 18 months with the company!
From testing new ship designs in the Ocean Basin at Haslar to developing novel ways to reform diesel for use in HGVs, I found the variety in my work was endless. The flexibility in the modules was great, it meant I was able to tailor my time on the scheme to my interests and gain a wide range of experience. I think the best thing was the opportunity to move around the division and see first-hand what everyone does, it has really added to my understanding of the business as a whole. Each placement is different but you can always guarantee there will be a new challenge or something new to learn wherever you go.
Alongside the modules I received a fantastic level of training on the graduate scheme, I feel it has given me a really good base for the role I'm in now. Monthly awareness sessions were presented by business leaders from areas such as Business Development and Strategy and were great for developing a wider appreciation of QinetiQ as a company. Alongside the awareness sessions formal training in areas such as presentations, report writing and CAD have all helped me to develop valuable skills for my future career.
On completing the scheme I took up a role in the Stealth Information and Range Services area of the business. My team supports all the underwater measurement equipment deployed at maritime ranges across the UK. As a Project Engineer my focus is on building our capability for the future; supporting large investment projects and leading smaller range improvement tasks. I love the variety of my job and solving the engineering challenges that come with supporting underwater equipment across 12 different sites!
Overall, I think the QinetiQ Maritime Graduate Development Scheme has been a fantastic introduction to working at QinetiQ and I am looking forward to building on the skills I have learnt so far in the next stage of my career.
